David Leibowitz
Senior Legal Advisor
David P. Leibowitz is the Senior Legal Advisor for UpRight Law. He holds a B. A. in Economics from Northwestern University and received his J.D., cum laude, from Loyola University of Chicago School of Law
David serves as coordinating co-editor of the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal’s “Consumer Corner.” He is also co-chair of an ABI task force studying individual chapter 11 cases. He has served as Co-Chair of the ABI’s Consumer Bankruptcy Committee and Co-Chair of the ABI’s Commercial Fraud Committee. He is a frequent speaker at ABI national, regional and local conferences.
David is certified as both a Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney and a Business Bankruptcy Attorney by the American Board of Certification. He is recognized as a “Super Lawyer” and as a member of “Leading Lawyers Network”.
David joined a distinguished panel of authors writing five chapters in the recently published Bloomberg Bankruptcy Treatise addressing attorneys’ fees and ethics in bankruptcy.
David is nationally known for his work in mortgage related issues arising in consumer bankruptcy cases. He has addressed this topic on several occasions at National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys conventions and workshops. His latest book “Chapter 13 – What You Need to Know” was published in 2010. His personal firm, Lakelaw, was the only private law firm in Wisconsin to have won a grant for foreclosure prevention from the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Administration.
Mr. Leibowitz has been a panel chapter 7 trustee for 25 years. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Bankruptcy Trustees and as editor of its publication NABTalk.
In 2010, Mr. Leibowitz received the Liberty Bell Award from the Judges of the 19th Judicial Circuit, Lake County, Illinois, for “Outstanding Commitment and Service” for his work in organizing that court’s mortgage foreclosure help desk and producing mortgage foreclosure information videos. In 2006, he received the Excellence in Pro Bono Service Award from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.
